Geotechnical Data Collection and Analysis in Jointed Rock

Abstract

In the recent decades, remote sensing technologies have been increasingly used for rock engineering projects. With the increasing potential of digital cameras and computers these technologies became a real alternative for man applications which benefit from fast and accurate determination of structural features, increasing safety for the personnel, permanent records of the rock faces, and detailed as-built surveys accounting for the true rock mass conditions in analyses. Especially 3D imaging based on computer vision proved to provide filed procedures and data processing for practitioners. This remote data acquisition does not require conventional surveying skills, images are taken freehand, and the use of zoom lenses increases the flexibility in the field. This contribution attempts to highlight some of the typical fields of application for 3D images in engineering geological and rock engineering projects.
